Organic Chives - Allium schoenoprasum

 - Easy to grow, mild onion like flavour

 - Edible blossom loved by bees and butterflies

 - Sow February-March, ideal for small spaces

 - Harvest: July-October

The smallest member of the Allium family (onions and garlic), chives have fine hollow leaves with a wonderful fresh, mildly onion like flavour. This perennial herb is easy to grow and is great for small herb gardens and pots on window sills. The flower is a pretty cluster of purple blossoms, loved by butterflies and bees and which are also edible. They can be used as companion plants with apples and roses to help combat scab and black spot. This anti-fungal property is also useful when using chive tea as a spray against mildew on cucumbers and gooseberries.

Sow: February to March, 10mm deep in a rich moist compost at 15-20C. Plahnt outdoors after the last frost.

Grow: Sunny or part shade in well drained soil. Keep from drying out and succession sow to have a constant supply.

Harvest: July to October
