Holding the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Little Gem is an excellent Cos Lettuce, one of the best known and most popular lettuces with crisp tasty texture with light sweet flavour. This hardy lettuce which originates from the Mediterranean island of Cos, is also known as Romaine lettuce and is the lettuce of choice for Caesar salads. It can be sown early in the year and all the way through to late Autumn. This Hardy Annual is quick to mature, tolerates hot weather and is slow to bolt. Little Gem is well suited to limited spaces such as containers and window-boxes.
Sow: Indoors from February, outdoors from March. Plahnt to 6-12mm deep at a temperature no more than 18°C. Seed should germinate in 7-14 days. Transplant to growing site when large enough with 20-30cm spacing between plants.
Grow: Sunny or part shade in fertile soil. Lettuce is about 95 percent water and it develops rapidly if the growing season is cool and moist. Keep soil moist, dry soil can cause bolting and sow a little and often to ensure a continuous supply.
Harvest: May to October. Pick when big enough for the salad bowl. Harvest all lettuce in early morning for the maximum carotene and best taste - refrigerate immediately.
