Organic Sprouting Broccoli seeds: Brassica oleracea

 - Tasty addition to salads and sandwiches ready in 5-6 days
 - High in beneficial anti-oxidants and vitamins, easy to grow on any light windowsill.
 - Sow and Harvest all year round.
 - Grow in a wide lidded jar or a specialist seed sprouter alternatively grow in traditional way as Micro Greens.

Sprouting seeds are an alternative to Cress and other micro-greens. Particularly great for sprucing up salads and sandwiches all year round and especially in Autumn and Winter when fresh salad is limited.

Broccoli sprouts are high in beneficial anti-oxidants and vitamins and are a very tasty addition to salads and sandwiches with a mild broccoli taste. Grow on any well-lit windowsill and they will be ready to harvest in 5-6 days.

Grow in specialist seed sprouters or a clean, large, wide necked jar works just as well (instructions below). Alternatively grow as micro greens.

Micro Greens:
Spread seeds over moist compost tray (2-3 tea spoons of seeds covers a 12cm squared tray) and cover the crop with another tray or plate to keep the moisture in and the seeds in darkness. Keep the soil moist but not drenched. When you see leaves starting to grow remove the cover and move to a well-lit window sill. Harvest when the leaves are open and 2-7cm tall (approx. day 5-14) and cut just above the soil.

Sprouting Seed Jar:
A wide necked jar with lid with small holes punched in to create a sieve or muslin and an elastic band. The seeds need circulation so don't use clingfilm.

Technique:

  • Make sure your jar is clean and sterile
  • Room-temperature water (very hot or very cold water can impact germination)
  • Put a handful of seeds into the jar (allow room for expansion as air needs to circulate around each)
  • Soak the seed in the jar for a few hours at the start to speed up germination
  • Use the lid (or muslin over the top) to drain the water.
  • Refill with room-temperature water, then drain water out leaving the seeds damp but not swimming in water.
  • Rinse 2-3 times a day with clean room temperature water.
  • Keep the seeds out of direct sunlight but at room temperature.
  • Harvest when most of the leaves are open and green and refrigerate for future use. They will keep for up to 5 days.
  • Clean your jar or sprouting trays thoroughly between uses to prevent any mould or bacterial build up.

These seeds are specifically produced for sprouting and not for crop production.
